The dazzling white sand coastal town of Puerto Galera bagged a one million-worth Beach Cleanup Package from NESTEA Refresh The Beach #PlungeToPledge. NESTEA BEACH, the most anticipated event of the summer, strengthened this year’s advocacy and environmental awareness through the digital campaign movement #PlungeToPledge where young adults and young-at- hearts pledged for the beach they support by doing the iconic NESTEA plunge.
With the power of social media today, netizens were able to support their favorite beaches—La Union, Puerto Galera and Boracay—by pledging, plunging, and posting their videos online. NESTEA ambassadors took the lead with Jasmine Curtis pledging for La Union, Luis Manzano for Puerto Galera, and Ellen Adarna for Boracay. Partner university organizations (UP Junior Marketing Association, DLSU Business Management Society and UST Junior Marketing Association) and coordination with in cooperation with advocacy groups (Fostering Education for Environment and Development FEED, Inc., Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. MBCFI and Boracay Foundation, Inc. BFI) also helped raise funds and awareness for the cause.
Awarding was held April 28 during the NESTEA Refresh The Beach #PlungeToPledge Awards and Sunset Socials at The Lind Boracay. Puerto Galera took home the prize with a total of 10,959 pledges. With their one million-peso beach cleanup package from NESTEA, Puerto Galera and MBCFI acquired a beach cleanup machine. The machine is a self-propelled and handy sand-sifting device that filters the trash from the sand. It is effective in removing beach debris such as seaweed, plastic, glass and cigarettes. With trash and litter as the main causes of ocean pollution, NESTEA’s next move is to also maintain and support the haven of Mindoro’s wildlife species.
This is just the beginning of efforts to assure a sustainable environment. Moving forward, NESTEA hopes to be the avenue for everyone to give back to the beaches we love.
